Chien-Ling Zeleny

Dr. Chien-Ling Liu Zeleny is a historian of medicine. She teaches at ISG and the Department of History at UCLA. Her research has focused on cross-cultural medical encounters between Western Europe and East Asia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as part of the larger scholarship of world history in connection with contemporary issues in global health. Her book manuscript, Relocating Pastorian Medicine: Accommodation and Acclimatization of Medical Practices at the Pasteur Institutes in China, 1899-1951, examines the roles of environment, material culture, and social beliefs, in the construction and practices of the scientific and public health measures against smallpox and rabies carried out by the Pastorians in China during the first half of the twentieth century.
