Departmental Petitions
This page will serve as the home of the form that students must fill out when submitting a petition to the Institute for Society and Genetics. Below are the options students can choose from and a brief description. Once a petitions is submitted, please allow a period of 3 – 5 business days for processing. An email will be sent to students regarding a petition decision using the email address provided on the form.

Pre-HBS Major Requirement Substitution
This option should be selected by students looking to substitute a course in our Social Theory Courses category. Transfer students may select this option as well regarding transfer credit received at a community college that may apply or cover a pre-HBS major requirement not already noted on the Degree Audit Report System (DARS).

HBS Major Core Requirement Substitution
This option should be selected by students looking to substitute a course into one of the core HBS major courses (i.e., 4.0 units of Soc Gen 195CE, substitute for Soc Gen 108, etc.). Graduating Class of 2022 seniors may select this option when substituting their Soc Gen 108 requirement with another Society and Genetics specific elective.

HBS Major Elective Substitution
This option should be selected by students looking to count a course as an HBS major elective that is not already found on the approved list of electives. Approval of courses petitioned are not guaranteed and students selecting this option should be able to provide a syllabus for the courses being petitioned.

ISG Vice Chair Petition
This option should be selected by students that require a Chair or Vice Chair signature for a college petition or a petition that requires Vice Chair of Undergraduate Education review. These petitions include but are not limited to: counting a graduate course towards HBS elective credit, waiving of a major or pre-HBS major requirement, reviewing research finals/projects (outside ISG) towards highest honors, etc.
