2024 ISG Commencement Speaker
Jodi Spangler, MD is a practicing family medicine physician. Dr. Spangler completed medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine and graduated with honors from UCLA with an undergraduate degree in Human Biology & Society as part of the Institute for Society & Genetics. She recognizes that human health is deeply interconnected with the health of the environment.
She works on projects that: improve access to high quality healthcare, cultivate true wellness, and also ones that make people smile. Grounding her practice in evidence-based medicine, a curious spirit, fierce advocacy, and a deep love for life’s big questions, she encourages us to re-connect with ourselves, each other and nature.
She is a mother of two, skydiver, surfer, outdoor type, and old van tinkerer. With a past that includes paragliding in the Himalayas, surfing a bore tide wave in Alaska, and chasing zebras by bike in Kenya, she advocates for injecting the spirit of adventure into everyday life. She was part of a disaster relief team of medical first responders after the earthquakes in both Haiti and Nepal.
Her work has been featured in MTVAct, Daily Bruin, NBC, 3 billion Under 30, COVID-19 Heroes podcast and more. She has been a speaker/guest lecturer at the DO Lectures, UCLA, TEDx, USC, and the NW Wilderness Medicine Conference among others.
