Academics

The Institute for Society and Genetics (ISG) is an interdisciplinary unit within the UCLA Division of Life Sciences.  ISG encourages scholarly research and educates students and the public about the ethical, legal and social implications of modern genetics and biotechnologies. We offer undergraduate courses, two major degrees (Human Biology and Society, B.A., and Human Biology and Society, B.S.), a minor in Society and Genetics, and postdoctoral fellowships.

Themes central to our interests include Bioethics and Public Science Policy; Medical Genetics and Public Health; Population Genetics and History (and the nexus of studies of human genetics, archeology, linguistics, history and culture); Evolutionary Biology, Culture and Behavior; Historical and Social Studies of Science; and Epigenetics and Epigenomics.
